See music through new eyes at the 2025-2026 A New Lens concert series! On October 17th, David Stevens (saxophone, clarinet) and Celine Ferro (clarinet) are excited to present music that is colorful, new, and emotional. This concert will feature woodwind chamber and solo music that David and Celine have a personal connection to, including works by local composers Jonathan Russell and Delvyn Case. A World of Music: Workshop Day

Do you remember the first time you learned a new language? Maybe it was your Spanish class in school, or maybe a great K-drama inspired you to learn Korean. Or maybe you even took up Klingon after watching Star Trek. Real or fictional, it’s exciting to learn new ways to talk to each other! We communicate with each other through music, too! In these workshops, you’ll explore new musical “languages” and get an introduction to new ways of speaking, learning, and connecting. Step through our doors to learn new skills and rhythms from Latin America, Scandinavia, the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe – all without leaving Belmont! For students ages 10+ with strong understandings of reading music, rhythm, and musical concepts. Powers students and faculty – Free! For one day only, Powers Music School’s most popular event for families is back! Whether you’re just looking to expose your kids to music, or you already know you want them to develop a lifelong passion, our Fall Open House is a great way to learn which music class is the right fit for your family. Test out classes, talk to our faculty, try all kinds of instruments at the “instrument petting zoo,” see our facilities at 160 Lexington Street, Belmont, make a musical craft, meet other families, and enjoy a fun day of music together! Demos for early childhood classes with open spots, such as The Music Class® (ages newborn – 4), Dalcroze Eurhythmics (ages 3 – 8), group piano (ages 4 – 11), and Suzuki (ages 3.5 and up), will be held throughout the afternoon. Faculty Concert Series: Karl Orvik, violin

Join us for our 2024-2025 Faculty Concert Series with a performance from String Department Chair <a href="https://powersmusic.org/people/karl-orvik/">Karl Orvik</a> followed by a reception for the community! Karl has always loved making mix tapes and playlists for people, and that’s what this program is: Karl’s playlist for the audience! From Bach to Hailstork, this playlist is three centuries in the making. The pieces, each written around 100 years apart from one another, all call out to Karl, and he hopes you’ll love them too! The program will include: Violin Partita No.3 in E major, BWV 1006 by J.S. Bach Caprice No. 6 by Niccolò Paganini Solo sonata No. 6 by Eugène Ysaÿe Divertimento by Adolphus Hailstork (with Gillian Gallagher, viola) 3 Madrigals by Bohuslav Martinů (with Gillian Gallagher, viola) The concert will be in the Concert Hall, up the stairs under the large purple awning, at 160 Lexington Street, Belmont, MA 02478 at 7:00. 50th Annual Stein Chamber Music Festival

Celebrating 50 Years of Making Music Together! January 25th, 2025, with concerts at 5:30 and 7:00 PM. Open to ALL musicians—Powers students and the general community. The Festival honors the memory of Joseph and Lise Stein, long-time Belmont residents who opened their home for joyous music-making several nights a week. Their contagious enthusiasm for chamber music continues to inspire our community, and their love of the genre lives on in this spectacular evening. The Steins’ living room was set up with scores, stands, and pianos – always ready for music! We’ll be transforming the concert hall into our own “living room” to inspire the comfort and encouragement of an evening of chamber music at the Steins’ house. We hope you will create wonderful memories celebrating beautiful music in this welcoming setting. The Stein Chamber Music Festival welcomes players of all ages and abilities, performing in groups of two or more players, from beginning students to amateurs and professionals. Each year the Festival is exciting, enjoyable, and always exceptional. We have had a wonderful contingent of younger performers in the past, and we encourage more to join in this year as well.

Irish Music Session

Once a month, Powers fiddle instructor Ellery Klein leads an Irish music session geared towards those who are learning the repertoire and want to play it at a moderate pace. Ellery will post the next new “Tune of the Month” online ahead of the session– a jig, reel, slide, polka, hornpipe, or air (slower tune). The first five minutes of the next session will be spent playing the tune at a slower pace. Modal Music Session

Join Powers Music School once every month to play modal music together in a group setting! Led by Tev Stevig, these sessions are a way to meet other modal musicians in the Boston area and build a shared repertoire in a variety of modal traditions, including Turkish, Greek, Armenian, Persian, Arabic, and more. Every month, our community will have access to an mp3 and recorded video (sheet music will also be available for those who would like it) of a new tune for our repertoire together. Session attendees will learn the tune on their own and we will start every session by playing the new tune together several times at a slow to moderate tempo, after which we will play through selections from the rest of our previously shared repertoire. Over time, attendees will build an ever expanding repertoire that can be played at any time with other local musicians. Musicians ages 10 and up of any background or level of experience&nbsp;are encouraged to attend. Bowed and plucked strings, percussion, woodwinds, brass, and vocals are all appropriate. Piano students can join as vocalists – we all start learning by singing! If you are a beginner or new to modal music, join us to play or sing along, or just listen. Faculty Concert Series: Marvento Duo

Join us for our 2024-2025 Faculty Concert Series with a performance from Marvento Duo, featuring piano faculty Elizabeth Basconi with Weronika Balewski, flute! Marvento Duo celebrates music by women composers both past and present, and considers their legacies today. Their program features Nadia Boulanger's "Three Pieces", Reena Esmail's ode to her grandparents in "Jhula Jhule," Emily Doolittle's experience of the natural world in "Palouse Songbook", and more. Boulanger taught dozens of well-known composers, including Aaron Copland, whose Duo for Flute and Piano became part of the “American sound.” They also bring to life a seldom-played Suite by Clemence de Grandval, who played a major role in supporting new music in late 19th century Paris. Hear how these composers are creating and influencing current generations of musicians, and leave inspired by how they depict their world! Faculty Concert Series: The Ackley Duo

Join Powers Music School for our 2024-2025 Faculty Concert Series with a performance from cello faculty Alison Ackley, with her husband Taylor Ackley, followed by a reception for the community! Alison and Taylor Ackley are partners in life and in music and have been performing together since 2015 when they founded the Deep Roots Ensemble. Taylor’s background in traditional American music and Alison’s extensive experience as a classical chamber musician come together to form the foundation of all the music they make together. The rich sound of their two-part harmony singing brings songs old and new to life in a way that feels both timeless and remarkable. While they primarily perform with the Deep Roots Ensemble their duo performances always bring a special, intimate character to their well-loved style. For this concert, they will be performing Selections from Songs for Trees, Hard Tellin’ and Songs from the Bitterroot to be announced from the stage. The performers for the night are Alison Ackley, voice and cello, Taylor Ackley, voice, mandolin and banjo, with Tony Watt, guitar. The concert will be in the Concert Hall, up the stairs under the large purple awning, at 160 Lexington Street, Belmont, MA 02478 at 7:00.
