Castaway: The Afterlife of Plastic

In this exhibition, the art collective TRES invites us to share their 2016 journey to document, collect, and photograph debris along the beaches of Australia. Evoking archaeology, marine biology, and cartography, their images summon us to more deeply engage with the natural vistas and objects they have encountered, and to examine and interpret them with fresh perspectives. TRES transports us with photographs of glowing orbs that resemble celestial spheres more than the bottle caps they once were. Making their way as garbage to Australia from as far away as China, these objects have been scarred by Bryozoa, tiny micro-organisms which can be seen in the display case in this exhibition. Now, plastic items such as these lay scattered about the otherwise pristine-appearing landscapes. The rhythmic flow of images challenges us to make sense of the terrain. With hand-drawn maps and charts, TRES attempts to bring order to a perplexing world, where plastic objects resemble organic ones, and “natural” landscapes bear unmistakable traces of human-made pollution.

The Radiant Sea: Color and Light in the Underwater World

Speaker: Steven Haddock, Senior Scientist, Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute Dive into the wonders of the ocean with marine biologist and photographer Steven Haddock, coauthor with Sönke Johnsen of The Radiant Sea (Abrams Books, 2025). Through stunning photography, insightful captions, and engaging essays, the book explores how sea creatures display transparency, vivid pigmentation, iridescence, bioluminescence, and fluorescence—from the shallow tropics to the deep sea. In this presentation, Steven Haddock will share the science behind these luminous marine phenomena, along with stories from the scientific expeditions that enabled him to capture them. Videos, animations, and hands-on demonstrations will bring the book’s remarkable images to life. This event offers a unique glimpse into the vibrant world hidden beneath the waves. About the Speaker Steven Haddock studies marine diversity, molecular biology, and bioluminescence at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute and the University of California,Santa Cruz. He specializes in fragile gelatinous animals that are abundant in the deep sea and open ocean. During his research expeditions, he uses scuba diving and submersibles to study the interactions between animals and has documented many bioluminescent species and behaviors for the first time. He uses genetic methods to reveal the relationships between organisms and to understand the proteins and chemicals that they use to make their own light. He also runs the Bioluminescence Web Page (biolum.eemb.ucsb.edu), the citizen-science project jellywatch.org, and teaches computing to scientists at practicalcomputing.org. His work has appeared frequently in the New York Times, National Geographic, and on the BBC.

Death and Burial in Colonial Cambridge

Speakers: Jason Ur, Stephen Phillips Professor of Archaeology and Ethnology, Department of Anthropology, Harvard University Aja Lans, Assistant Professor in Anthropology and Africana Studies, Johns Hopkins University Since the founding of Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the 1630s, the Old Burying Ground—located steps away from Harvard Square at the intersection of present-day Massachusetts Avenue and Garden Street—has served as the final resting place for many notable figures tied to Harvard’s early history. These include Henry Dunster, John Leverett, and Benjamin Wadsworth, as well as prominent families, Allston, Brattle, Craigie, Davis, Hancock, Porter, and Tufts, whose names remain familiar in Cambridge, Somerville, and Boston today. The cemetery is also the burial site of at least two enslaved individuals, Cicely and Jane, who lived and died in the early eighteenth century, and of Charles Lenox and his daughter, two free Black residents of the early nineteenth century. In this talk, Jason Ur and Aja Lans will discuss these burials and reveal how they use noninvasive research tools—such as photography, digital mapping, and radar technologies—to shed new light on slavery in New England and colonial burial practices. Day of the Dead Workshop: Making Papier-Mâché Skeletons

Instructor: Brioch Ochoa, Multidisciplinary Artist Join visual artist Brioch for a two-hour, hands-on workshop celebrating the rich traditions of Mexico’s Day of the Dead through art-making. Explore the holiday’s rich symbolism as you craft your own miniature skeleton sculptures using cardboard and papier-mâché. Let your creativity shine as you design and paint your unique skeletons—ready-made examples will be available for inspiration, while unfinished pieces await your personal touch. This workshop encourages playful experimentation and creative discovery. All materials will be provided—just bring your imagination. Fees: $30 members / $35 nonmembers per person. Mavericks: Three Visionary Pharaohs of Egypt

Speaker: Lawrence M. Berman is John F. Cogan, Jr. and Mary L. Cornille Chair, Art of Ancient Egypt, Nubia, and the Near East, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston Hatshepsut, Amenhotep III, and Akhenaten each ruled Egypt for long periods, leaving a lasting impact on its art, politics, and religion. Though all were powerful leaders, each tells a distinct story. In this lecture, Lawrence M. Berman explores the reigns and legacies of these three remarkable Eighteenth Dynasty pharaohs, considering questions such as: What made them successful—or controversial? How were they viewed in their own time, and how have archaeologists and the public interpreted them since? The talk also examines broader themes—from the power of images and identity to iconoclasm and the writing of history—inviting reflection on who gets to shape history, and why it still matters today.
