Her style harkens back to the great vocalists of the Big Band Era, evoking the glamour and sophistication of classic jazz as few modern vocalists can. Originally from New York, Cara began singing and performing in a variety of styles from a young age. She attended Boston College, where she delved into world music, continued her jazz vocal studies, and earned a BA in Music.&nbsp; Early on in her musical career, Cara was singled out by DownBeat magazine, who named her an Outstanding Vocalist. She went on to share the stage with jazz great Roberta Gamborini at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, and was named a "talent to watch" by the legendary trumpeter Wayne Bergeron following her vocal performance at the Elmhurst Jazz Festival. Her LP, “So Near”, received critical acclaim both in the states and abroad, earning international distribution. Cara's 2013 original single "Poor Heart” marked a maturing approach that reinterpreted the '40s torch song for a modern audience. The heck with puttin’ a little spring in your step – PUT SOME SINATRA IN YOUR SPRING! Actually, how ‘bout a bunch of Ol’ Blue Eyes, a couple sprigs of Michael Buble, a dash of Dean Martin, a pinch of Bobby Darin, a smidge of Johnny Mathis, and the zest of one very exciting ‘secret ingredient’ (see below)! That’ll all go down when the 19-piece Compaq Big Band returns to one of our favorite new-to-us-in-2025 venues on Monday March 23rd with vocalist Ed Scheer of Boston’s ‘The Love Dogs’ (TLD). The whole pack'll be at Backbeat Brewing Company (BBC) in Beverly, Massachusetts. In addition to treating audiences from Beverly and beyond to monthly performances from his all-star ‘house band’ - the Backbeat Big Band (BBB) - well-known New England trumpet player Jay Daly is again teaming up with BBC owner Pete Harkins to host regional guest big bands, too. FYI, after their December-January break, the BBB returns on Monday February 9th. And we’re not done yet with the March 23rd program yet – not by a long shot! You’ll also be treated to a terrific opening set by the accomplished North Reading (MA) High School Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ben Owens! The Greater Boston Vintage Society (GBVS) has ‘enlisted’ the 19-piece Compaq Big Band to help take you back in time to a bygone era – and certainly a different climate than mid-winter New England! Think warm breezes, palm trees, tiki drinks, and authentic Swing Era music of the day to transport you to the Officers’ Club at the United States Army Air Forces’ Hickam Field on the island of Oahu, Hawaii on the night of Saturday December 6, 1941. Maybe a take a welcome break from Christmas shopping? Wanna just get in the ‘swing’ (ha!) of the holiday season! The 19-piece Compaq Big Band is THRILLED to be back with one of our FAVORITE longtime clients/events when we return to the BC Full Swing dance club’s 2025 Winter Social! This is a *FREE PUBLIC* swing dance on Saturday December 6th on the Boston College campus in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts!   There’s a group-friendly introductory swing lesson at 5:00pm, followed by band sets 6:00pm-8:00pm. Singles, couples, groups, and meet-ups welcomed. There’s sure to be a great mix of dancers with all levels of swing experience – beginners will find lots of patient partners ;) All ages welcomed, too! Swing City is famous for being inclusive, welcoming singles, couples, collegiate swing dance club members, and meetup groups. Dancers of all ages and experience levels have flocked to SC for decades, and you’ll always find great partners, from novice to expert. Most importantly, just plain nice people. And, SC’s always been faithful to their rich tradition of booking terrific swing bands - from New England and beyond. Especially if you’re new to swing dancing – or even just want to take it on a short ‘test drive’ - Swing City is *THE* iconic dance environment to dip your toes in the water. Elizabeth will be channelin’ Diane Schuur, Ella Fitzgerald, Natalie Cole, and more. She’s a rising jazz vocalist, composer, and educator residing in Greater Boston. She received a Bachelors in Vocal Performance from Ithaca College, and more recently obtained a Masters in Jazz Performance from the New England Conservatory. Sharing and expressing music has become an intrinsic part of her life. In addition to teaching at NEC Prep and singing with local jazz and classical groups, her own jazz quartet has performed at the famed Mad Monkfish in Cambridge, MA. We’ll also be hittin’ the dancers with some of our best instrumental arrangements, too. Think Sammy Nestico, Frank Foster, Billy Strayhorn… Just as with our first gig at the 'old' Swing City in the 1990s (the West Cambridge VFW at the same street address (with the rocket ship out front...) our sets will be *100% DANCEABLE SWING* – mostly medium, some a little slower, some a little faster. But, *NO BALLROOM, LATIN, OLDIES, ROCK, OR POP STYLES* mixed in. Those great sets of will, of course, contain several original arrangements of compositions from the Golden Age of big bands to anchor the evening, but we’ll enhance the dance as only the Compaq Big Band can by mixing in some more progressive - and more hip - arrangements of the Great American Songbook and much more! It all adds up to approachable treatments of swingin' tunes you all know. Another hallmark of our swing dance performances is an organized, no-nonsense approach to minimizing the time between tunes. Also note that we’re a FULL 19-piece big band: 14 horns + 4 rhythm + vocalist. 19-Piece Compaq Big Band w/ Special Guest Vocalist Anaïs Reno at FREE 'Sounds on the Souhegan' Summer Concert Series Finale

The sun may be setting on the 19-piece Compaq Big Band’s loaded Summer 2025, but we still have a couple HOT concerts remaining! On Wednesday Auust 27th we’re once again *THRILLED* to have Special Guest Special Guest Vocalist Anaïs Reno out front! The audience in Milford is in for a VERY RARE treat when this jazz sensation from New York City returns to again grace a Southern New Hampshire stage with us – after performing just the night prior at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s iconic Dizzy's Club ;) This will be the season finale for ‘Sounds on the Souhegan’, the popular FREE public concert series presented annually by the Milford Recreation Department. Band plays 7:00pm-8:30pm Rain Or Shine. The primary outdoor venue for the show is The Stage at Keyes Memorial Park, located at 45 Elm Street. Bring a blanket and/or lawn chair. Free parking along Elm Street and in the Keyes Park lots. In the event of rain the concert moves indoors to the Milford Town Hall, upstairs in the Auditorium (3rd Floor). The Town Hall is located at One Union Square (on ‘The Oval) in the center of Milford. The Auditorium is accessible by stairs at the Nashua Street main entrance, or via an elevator via the rear entrance on Middle Street. Parking is available along Elm Street, South Street, Nashua Street, and Middle Street, plus on The Oval and in lots off Bridge Street and next to TD Bank. If held indoors, chairs will be provided and seating will be General Admission Only. Doors Open 6:00pm – please arrive early for best seats! Milford offers a wide variety of great choices for sustenance and libation before and after the concert, with many options on or just off The Oval. In 2024 the Compaq Big Band was fortunate to have Anaïs Reno up from New York to be featured in front of the full band on three killer concert events, including at the prestigious City Winery Boston. And, she wowed every audience member - from just sitting just a few feet in front of her to around the world - when she performed at a fabulous live studio, on-air FM, and streamed performance at 90.5 WICN in Worcester with a talented quintet of CBB instrumentalists 15 months ago. Apropos of our singer’s hometown, we'll also program a very hip version of Billy Joel’s “New York State Of Mind” from Chris Walden. And, we’ll round out the evening with a few tasty instrumental arrangements from the likes of Count Basie, Buddy Rich, and Gordon Goodwin. Since her public Boston debut with us in May of last year at City Winery, this rising New York City jazz star has been busy performing on stages in Manhattan, St. Louis, Buffalo, Philadelphia (where one of her very favorite venues once named an ice cream after her…), San Francisco, London, Edinburgh, Lake Tahoe, New Hampshire, Western Massachusetts, North Carolina, and more. Anaïs began singing the Great American Songbook at the age of eight, and has been performing at legendary Birdland Jazz Club in Times Square since she was thirteen. A graduate of the acclaimed Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music &amp; Art and Performing Arts in NYC, in May 2025 she received her bachelor's degree in jazz vocal performance from Purchase College (SUNY Purchase) in New York, where she was an Ella Fitzgerald Scholar. Among her many accolades, she won the Ben Tucker Jazz Award at the 2023 American Traditions Competition, took First Place at the 2020 Mabel Mercer Foundation competition, received the 2020 Julie Wilson Award, was awarded Second Place at the 2018 Michael Feinstein’s Great American Song Book Academy competition, and earned the 2016 Forte International Competition’s Platinum Award. She has performed for sold out shows at storied NYC venues such as Rose Hall at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, The Django, Dizzy’s, and Feinstein's 54 Below, plus Seneca One Auditorium in Buffalo, NY for International Jazz Day, as well as singing her own compositions with the NY Philharmonic in David Geffen Hall (Lincoln Center). Anaïs has also sung at Madison Square Garden, and at the Caramoor Jazz Festival. She delivered a stunning rendition of “America The Beautiful” on national television at Citi Field for the New York Mets/Yankees game on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Our 14th consecutive year celebrating the end of another Friends of Stark Park great season! The park and bandstand are a picturesque setting for this FREE public event. The 19-piece Compaq Big Band is BEYOND EXCITED to make a midsummer return to one of our favorite new haunts, the Backbeat Brewing Company (BBC) in Beverly, MA, Massachusetts, on Monday July 28th. As was the case with our smash debut at BBC this past March 24th, Special Guest Special Guest Vocalist Anaïs Reno from New York City will be out in front! Backbeat has quickly become New England’s premier ‘big band hang’, featuring monthly appearances by an all-star ‘house band’ - the Backbeat Big Band (BBB), directed by well-known New England jazz trumpeter Jay Daly – along with frequent guest big band performances. Both Jay and BBC owner Pete Harkins are HUGE fans of the genre! As if having Anaïs with us at BBC again isn’t ‘enough’ for diehard big band fans, we’re honored to have world-renowned jazz trumpeter and Grammy Award-winning big band leader Bijon Watson as part of our stellar trumpet section for this show! He’ll be featured on Bill Holman’s dynamic arrangement of “Begin The Beguine” done for Doc Severinsen, and Adrian Drover’s legendary treatment of “MacArthur Park” done for Maynard Ferguson’s full-size big band. To borrow a famous boxing quote, “We wuz robbed!” in Summer 2024 when the 19-piece Compaq Big Band was rained out of our debut at the Weston, Massachusetts Summer Concert Series. Fingers crossed that lightning (or even just drizzles..) won’t strike twice in the same place when we try again on Wednesday July 9th! This is a FREE, public outdoor concert presented by the Weston Rcreation Department - just bring a blanket and/or lawn chair. Weather permitting. The show runs 7:00pm to 8:30pm. Use “11 Town House Road, Weston, MA” to navigate to the venue, but you can also get there via Maps by using “Lamson Park”, which will take you to the side of the park on Boston Post Road. Plenty of free, on-street parking. Stunning the crowd from out front will be vocalist Aviana Gedler- a rising jazz star in Boston! Aviana Gedler is a jazz singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist with an unwavering passion for music and performance artistry. She placed 2nd in the 2024 Ella Fitzgerald Jazz Vocal Competition and has showcased her talent in many performances across the Midwest, including the Iowa City Jazz Festival and the Jazz in July concert series in Des Moines, Iowa. In 2022, she earned her Associate of Applied Arts degree from the School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa, and received the 2021 and 2022 Downbeat Magazine awards for Best Vocal Jazz Soloist in the community college division. Aviana just received her undergraduate degree in vocal jazz performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, having studied with Dominique Eade and Ran Blake.
